The Kyoto University Asian Studies Unit (KUASU) was founded in 2012. The KUASU is an interdisciplinary academic centre for integrated Asian Studies. It aims to open "a new window on Asia" by providing researchers and students from around the world with the opportunity to connect and to collaborate.

Kyoto Univerity’s Faculty and Graduate School of Letters can be traced back to the establishment of the College of Letters (Bunka Daigaku) of Kyoto Imperial University in 1906. Currently in 2014, it consists of five divisions with 33 departments: "philosophy and literature","philosophy", "history", "behavioral studies", and "contemporary culture".

TheFaculty and Graduate School of Economics at Kyoto University originates from the economics lectures at the College of Law of the Kyoto Imperial University in 1900. The Faculty of Economics was established in 1919 and the Graduate School of Economics in 1953. The Graduate School has over 250 masters and doctoral students and hosts around 100 international students.

Kyoto University is one of the major national universities located in Kyoto, Japan. It is the second oldest university in Japan and was formerly one of Japan's Imperial Universities. Today Kyoto University has about 22,000 students enrolled in both undergraduate and graduate programmes. In the 2010 Global University Ranking, Kyoto University came in 11th place.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is located in New Delhi and was established in the early 1970s. It is mainly a research-oriented postgraduate University.
