Fontodi, Chianti Classico, 2015The Fontodi estate, located in the village of Panzano is one of the archetypes of the appellation, operating at the highest of levels. When the 2015 vintage was nearing conclusion in Panzano, there were no memories of better weather during fall ripening. The combination of place, time, & people came together harmoniously in 2015 to showcase why Classico's reputation returned to fruition73

La Mesma, Gavi di Gavi, Brut, 2011The three sisters who run La Mesma (translation: "herself") are so enamored with the Cortese grape of the Gavi region that they're the only producer to make all four of the different types of Gavi allowed by law. One of the rarest forms of the region is this one: Gavi Spumante Metodo Classico, which is made in the same laborious manner as Champagne. But where Champagne is all about elegance & minerality, the Cortese grape lends a unique floral aroma & texture that you won't find anywhere else127

Colli Tortonesi - Terre di Libarna, Ezio Poggio, "Archetipo", 2019If ever there were an indigenous Italian varietal that could rival the body & complexity of white Burgundy, it would be Timarosso. Found in the southern-facing hills of Libarna in the Colli Tortonesi, Ezio Poggio champions the unbridled quality of the grape. Never using oak & only aging a short period of time on the lees, the wine rivals those traded in Dijon for texture with the added ability to adapt to a wide variety of cuisine107

Sauvignon Blanc, Cantina Andriano, "Floreado", 2019Alto Adige, with its climate nestled between Mediterranean & Alpine, is home to some of the planet's cleanest white wines. The pure mountainous air combined with the elevation create growing conditions impeccable for great Sauvignon Blanc. Within the larger region of Alto Adige, the Cantina has identified a site called "Floreado"in the Dolomites that they have always thought to be the ideal spot in the valley to ripen Sauvignon Blanc. While other great growing regions may impart their unique regional flavors, Alto Adige produces pristine varietal interpretations77

Bibi Graetz, "Casamatta", 2019Nothing about half Israeli/half Norwegian, Tuscan-born Bibi Graetz is typical. He took his family's few acres of vineyards originally used for personal consumption & transformed them into the birthplace of some of the region's most famous wines–all in about two decades & without traditional training. This blend of traditional Tuscan white grapes based primarily on Vermentino is meant to evoke the sea-breezes, sun, & smells of the coastal Maremma region within Tuscany61

Etna Bianco, Terra Costantino, "de Aetna" 2018One of the most fascinating events (aside from volcanic eruptions) to happen on the island of Sicily is the awakening of the wines of Mt. Etna. The reds & whites are based untraditionally not in vineyards, but on flattened portions of ancient lava flows from different eruptions over several centuries in a territorial system known as Contrada. Terra Costantino's vineyards climb the southeastern slope of Mount Etna at Contrada Blandano, in the territory of Viagrande, the heart of the Etna DOC zone. From here, you can see the sea and taste the windblown tang of salt in the air.77

Spottswoode, North Coast, 2020As one of California's first organic wineries, Spottswoode Estate focuses on quality over quantity. Their Sauvignon Blanc is one of only four wines they produce, so the family-run winery can focus on boutique winemaking practices, which in this case means fermenting in a variety of containers, including a ceramic tank & clay amphora. This varied approach creates a dynamic wine with texture & intriguing complexity128

Rivers-Marie, Sonoma Coast, 2018Love it or hate it, buttery, toasty California Chardonnay is a classic for a reason. That being said, if you love it, keep reading. Started by Thomas Rivers Brown & Genevieve Marie Welsh in 2002, Rivers-Marie sets out to make single varietal wines made to reflect the vineyard & vintage from which they came. This one has everything we love—it's unapologetically bold with a plush texture balanced by enough citrus to make you look forward to the next sip136

Featured Rosato
Langhe, Tenuta Carretta, "Cereja", 2020Many Italian rosé, or rosato, mimic the style made famous in Provence—with a twist. They are dry & light like the French iteration, but instead of being a wine more often consumed apart from food, they often are bottled with an overt friendliness towards the dining table. Tenuta Carretta is closing in on their 550th year of viticulture, so they are starting to get the hang of it. This rosato is a blend of Piedmontese grapes Barbera & Nebbiolo, created with a nod to both Provence & the great terroir of the Langhe67

Featured Barbera d'Asti Superiore
Marchesi Incisa della Rocchetta, "Sant'Emiliano", 2017The Incisa della Rocchetta family is probably best known as the proprietors of Tenuta San Guido, the winery responsible for creating Sassicaia, the first "Super Tuscan". However, the family's provenance is surprisingly not in Tuscany but rather in Piedmont, on the bank of the Tanaro River just east of Asti. "Sant'Emiliano" spends a year & a half in French oak barrels, which affords the wine an elegance & depth of flavor not typically found in Barbera. This is an incredible value & a rare opportunity to enjoy a little-known wine produced by one of Italy's greatest & most revered winemaking families90

Azelia, 2016This historic winery run by the lauded Scavino family combines both power & elegance through maniacal attention to detail in the vineyards. The vines used for this wine are an average age of 40 years & low yielding—but in the economy of viticulture, less is more! Greater concentration, ripeness & aromatic complexity create the ideal experience in the glass; or if you prefer, the ideal party in the mouth142

Cantina del Pino, "Ovello", 2015Ovello is the northernmost cru in the village of Barbaresco. The soils here tend to produce wines of longevity & complexity without sacrificing on flavor. At the most dramatic place one could plant vines, Cantina del Pino was established on top of the Ovello hill over 100 years ago, perfected by multiple generations of one family. The intensity of the soil plus the epic quality of the vintage combine for a Barbaresco that proves why this appellation has so much potential165

Bindi Sergardi, "La Ghirlanda", 2016There is a lot to celebrate in the original Chianti zone, now known as Chianti Classico. The wines, via careful advances in wineries & vineyards, have returned to their status as one of the world's most important wine regions. Sergardi is a winery that has been through the highs & lows of Chianti's success and now finds itself in a promising position after all the region's advances. Located near Siena in Vagliagli, the vineyard is surrounded by a ring of forest, or a crown, which translates into the wine's name: "La Ghirlanda"96

Il Paradiso di Frassina "Moz Art", 2016It's often said that the Sangiovese from Montalcino may be the finest iteration of the varietal. Il Paradiso di Frassina is located on the northern side of the Montalcino hill, where the lack of solar power comes across as pure elegance in the final wine. But what makes the vineyard unique isn't its location, but rather the 50 loudspeakers continually subjecting the vines to Mozart's finest works. From the rows between the speakers, at the top of their vines, the finest fruit is selected only to be made into Brunello di Montalcino. Simply stated, this should be a symphonic experience211

Le Fonti di Panzano, "Merlot", 2016Located almost directly in between Florence & Siena is the Fonti farm in Panzano. Although several of their Chiantis are worthy of special praise, we turn instead to their varietal bottling of Merlot. The grape is known to thrive in the clay soils of Bordeaux, which are rarely seen in vineyards anywhere else in the world—except Chianti, where the famed Gabbro soils are clay-based. Merlot was originally planted on the estate as an accessory varietal in the Chianti blend but grew to be so exemplary that it earned its own bottling97

Featured Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Avignonesi, 2016One of the great aliases in wine is the name used for Sangiovese in Montepulciano: the local terminology is "Prugnolo Gentile", which translates into "Gentle Plum". Sangiovese this close to the Apennines in Tuscany tends to produce wines of softer tannins & darker fruit than further to the west in Chianti, hence the name. There is no estate in this part of the region to rival Avignonesi, whose iconic Nobile bottling is a prime example of the potential of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano69

La Ragose, 2017The Ripasso process involves blending wine from partially dried grapes & freshly vinified wine that has been "re-passed" over the leftovers from the production of Amarone. It creates a wine that is reminiscent of Amarone, but with a lighter drinkability. La Ragose does an incredible job combining the freshness of a Valpolicella with the depth of an Amarone77

Etna, Graci, 2019The Sicilian region of Etna is unlike any other wine producing region in the world. Most notoriously known as the home of Mount Etna, Europe's highest active volcano, one would not consider this to be an ideal place to grow grapes. Dangerously steep, rocky slopes, unpredictable weather, and the threat of volcanic eruption at any point? Very few are up for the challenge of making wine under such extreme circumstances. The work of these daring vintners results in wines made with the region's indigenous Nerello Mascalese grape like Graci's: energetic fruit & smoky earth with an elegant structure, making Etna Rosso the next big thing for Burgundy & Piedmont lovers94

Featured Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
Résonance Wines, "Résonance Vineyard", Yamhill-Carlton, 2017Long has the correlation between Willamette Valley and Burgundy existed. This correlation is sanctioned and confirmed more than ever by the influx of Burgundian vintners and winemakers investing in the region. Yamhill-Carlton, a horseshoe shaped AVA nested within the Willamette Valley, is defined by a legacy of ancient marine sediment soils that are among the oldest in the area. These soils drain quickly, making them ideal for viticulture, and the vines tend towards more complete ripening, even in cooler growing seasons. When Maison Louis Jadot was looking to expand to their first winery outside of Burgundy, they knew exactly where to begin their search. In 2011 they found the Resonance vineyard for sale and they jumped at the chance to call this beautiful location home. With the same meaning in English and French, Résonance evokes many great things to come.91

Featured Vin Santo del Chianti
Poggio la Noce, "Ejià - Occhio di Pernice", 2013Vin Santo is such a rare & difficult wine to make that its success has always been attributed to the heavens, hence the name: "holy wine". Even rarer is the rosé iteration based on Sangiovese which requires nearly six years of aging. To illustrate the commitment, consider this: Poggio la Noce would use the same amount of grapes to make two cases of wine as they do for one half bottle of their Vin Santo375ml 164
